

Director, Pediatric Diabetes Program
Dr. Stephen Gitelman is director of the Pediatric Diabetes Program at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital and associate director of the Diabetes Education and Research Center at UCSF Medical Center. In addition to caring for parents, he is involved in research. Much of this work involves type 1 diabetes, with efforts to improve current treatment and ultimately prevent the disease. Gitelman works closely with other members of the UCSF Diabetes Center and scientists at renowned centers around the world to devise novel therapies to block autoimmune destruction of the insulin-producing beta cells.
Gitelman graduated summa cum laude with an undergraduate degree in biology from Princeton University. He earned a medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and completed a residency in pediatrics and a fellowship in pediatric endocrinology at UCSF, where he joined the faculty in 1990. He is a professor of clinical pediatrics. Gitelman has appeared regularly in the publication Best Doctors in America and has been ranked one of the Bay Area's best doctors by San Francisco magazine. He has received numerous awards and is a member of professional societies, such as the Society for Pediatric Research, Lawson Wilkins Pediatric Endocrine Society, American Diabetes Association and Endocrine Society.
